October Update

I'm up to chapter 25 of Perilous Waif, and expecting to finally finish the first draft sometime in early November. This project has taken a lot longer than I'd originally hoped, but it's almost done. At this point I expect to finish editing and proofreading over the following month while I get cover art lined up, and publish the book sometime around the end of the year.

So next time around I should have some progress to report on the new Daniel Black book that so many of you have been asking about.

  1. Good to hear! Looking forward to both books. I confess I've managed to dog-ear my e-copies of the DB books...that takes some serious over-re-reading.

  4. Just re-read Daniel Black series for 4th time. Amazing amount of depth for short period of time the MC has been on alternate earth.

  5. One idea for Daniel Black Novels.. Mineral Wool (Rock Wool). Its just thin spun lava minerals. Fireproof, durable, and insulating. Would be useful for Daniel, maybe not for clothing... But as soft bedding, curtains, even agriculture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wool

  6. I can't wait for book 4 of Daniel Black. I haven't been this excited about a series since I first read Game of Thrones back in the 90's.

  7. In January you said as an experiment you'd be releasing two versions of the sequel to Extermination, one with explicit scenes and one with 'Fade to black' with not plot essential themes.

Which version will be available on Audio?

    1. I'm very curious about this as well. Hope it's the explicit version!

  8. Glad to hear it I was wondering about the mortars and the problem of communication between mortar nests wouldn't it be best to create a flag or some kind of light lantern signaling?

  16. I really want to know what is going to happen with the bananas that Mara gave him! Will he see if the Grove can grow more with the mana he has given them? Also excited to see what all of his allies can do with their new power sources!
Then what the prince does now that the enemy is gone and they City is in ruin. Does he stay or just abandon it to the conclave and Daniel?
Just so many possibilities and things that could happen!

    1. The enemy is not gone. Troops in transit and already in place are not affected at all. How large the damage due to the radiation weapon is, remains to be seen. He is unlikely to get them all. How good Gaia's medics are is also unknown.
It seems to me that he has dealt a major blow, but not a knockout.

    2. True but I think it might have Gaia redirecting troops to other places. It really depends on how she takes the attack and how it worked. But in my mind it worked well, and she blames the Bran for this and so will go after him where ever he is at and I doubt Bran goes back to the City and instead takes the Prince and that elite group out to the king to keep fighting leaving Daniel to run things there and grow!

    3. I don’t think the enemy is gone.

My interpretation was that he only destroyed (hopefully) the “magical-x-million-elite-Neanderthal-warrior-storage-place”.

That is clearly a heavy setback for Gaia’s invasion/extermination plans and will hopefully buy some time for further preparations.

But there is a whole (inverted) world full of big and strong cannon fodder savages left….

This world is said to be about 2.000 miles in diameter…that is nearly 3,5 times the surface of the whole USA!

I think Gaia still can round up enough ape men and dinosaurs (and probably other monsters) from this world alone to furthermore threaten Kozalin and the rest of humanity. Even without resorting to other sources (e.g. great beasts…).

Storywise I think we have left this special enemy behind.
New enemy was introduced, fought in several battles, brave defenders resisted (barely), hero interrupted troop support base……level completed….welcome to the next level with new enemies/challenges.

I don’t think they will completely disappear but they will probably only be mentioned in general descriptions of the besieged human settlements.

What I want to say is…the main character/DB will have other problems in book 4 (than the Neanderthals).

    4. With so many of her troops dead, and The Black Citadel such a thorn in her side, i imagine Geia will just reroute a few great beasts. There were giants with a dragon not to faw off wasnt there?

    5. nephi rowe November 20:
“I really want to know what is going to happen with the bananas that Mara gave him.”

      ==>
I don’t think he has bananas.
Admittedly it was not explicit mentioned if Mara and Daniel ate them/it or not.

But my impression was that they were the after-sex-cigarette….eh…-banana.

Mara gave him one and said “But first, eat this.”.

Bananas (as plural) were mentioned, but in the text “She fetched the bananas she’d picked on the way in, and handed me one.”

Maaybe he ate more after that...(?)

So it is not clear if he ate/has more than one.

But I think it is unlikely that Mara gave him highly magical super-god-fruits for his next recess in a sandwich bag on an undercover mission.

And that was a very good idea! They met Gaia herself on the way home. She probably would have smelled the rat and flattened the whole group.

  17. But Brand does not know of Daniel's strike. And as soon as he learns why would he forgo watching the wizard who can wipe out millions by himself closely?
And for the Prince that would mean abandoning the Conclave, which is the most important resource the kingdom has left. They will certainly not survive as a farming country in Northern Europe during an Ice Age.

    1. Brand already knows Daniel's thoughts on joining them in the last battle. He made the statement to him that no matter what the outcome he should try saving as many people as possible to try and repopulate the earth.
So it would be in the best interest at that point to leave the city and make it look like they have abandon it so that Daniel can do just that in saving as many people as possible.
The Prince also seems to be in the mindset of following Brand to victory in the last battle and I am sure Brand can convince him to leave the City and join the King for more battles.

    2. If I understand you correctly you say that Gaia will go for Brand personally. I have my doubts. He is after all just a representative of the Aesir. And even if she wanted to go for him personally, he can use those winged horses and as a demigod he can try to escape by suicide. And if he stays in Kozalin he could evacuate through the Dark Portal.
      Gaia knows all that.

And there are other factors. Gaia's strategy seems to be to use climate to starve her enemies and use it to immobilize them and give her forces superior mobility through dinosaurs and earth paths.
To make that work she needs to prevent trade in food. Kozalin happens to be a port city located on a navigable major river system and to hold a magical portal. She may very well want it for that reason alone.
Furthermore from her perspective a genocidial weapon was delivered through the Dark Portal. That turns the city housing it into a high priority target.

Looking at the situation from the prince's perspective, he'd give up tactical mobility if he abandons the Dark Portal. And he has no idea whether there will be a next harvest during Fimbulwinter in Varmland. He knows that he needs to hold the ports and the rivers. And he has a reason to distrust Daniel Black. Avilla did enchant and assault him.

Looking at it from Brand's perspective, I doubt that letting Daniel shelter women to repopulate Europe is his first priority. He is working for the Aesir after all and letting the Andregi bleed out on the walls of Kozalin is a good plan.
Furthermore, he made that promise before he knew that Daniel Black has weapons of mass destruction.

    3. Very true on all of that.

But we really don't know if Daniel is on Gaia's radar or if its just the conclave and Brand that she is after. Cause the last attack before Daniel used his weapon destroyed allot of the city and its people. For Brand and the Prince to keep using it is very risky. If Brand truely wants Daniel to be a threat and to keep doing what has been doing they are better off making it seem like they are abandoning the city and destroying the Dark portal.
Biggest reasoning i can give behind that is the Dark Portal itself they are running out of Humans to sacrifice and eventually the city will be a lost cause. So do the abandon the city and destroy the dark port in hopes of giving Daniel time and safety to get his fighting forces together or do the y keep using the Dark Portal and eventually loose?
We already know this is not the last battle for them but what gives humanity the best advantage? Plus giving Daniel a city with the conclave and the remaining population might give them a new type of Army later down the road?
No matter what William decides i am just way excited about the possibilities for what is in store for Daniel and his Coven!

      Delete
    4. Let's do the math. Assuming three hours of operation they need to sacrifice about 20 people per day. That is about 600 people per month. They can operate the Dark Portal for a long time.

The thing is they just cannot give up Kozalin. The city would keep defending itself. Even assuming they would want to abandon more than 10% of the kingdom's population. And assuming that the Conclave would let them destroy the Dark Portal and assuming that Gaia and Loki would believe that they'd give up such a weapon before they absolutely must. And of course if they believe that, at least Loki would start to wonder why and that is a thought that would bring Daniel into real trouble.

And the Aesir would want to make everybody think they used this new mysterious weapon. That really cannot be done if they give up the obvious way to deploy it. Daniel is certainly not going to do anything to challenge that claim. And finally, Brand is not going to make such a decision. He is unlikely to be the first to learn of the strike against Gaia's forces. This will go up to Vali at least or to Odin himself.

And, lastly, neither Brand nor the Prince fight for humanity. They fight for the Aesir or Varmland respectively. The Prince really needs to hold Kozalin. He will fight to the last man. Brand needs to kill Andregi and recruit for Valhalla. And, finally, he'll figure that even the Black Citadel will not withstand the full brunt of the attack alone.

  18. You are truly unique and amazing author, I can't wait to read more of your work

  19. We also need to remember that brand and his fellow aesir will need followers to worship them when this is all over. so long as they are worshiped they cannot truly die. So 'yes daniel, take in all these women and repopulate the world' he just needs to make sure they are loyal followers of the gods....

    1. Well we're closing in on the end of the year with giant steps which means everybody's schedule gets slammed with social obligations as well as professional ones (i believe Mr. Williams still has a 'day job' besides writer) so i wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

Then again it's Christmas season too so miracles may (yet) happen. (c:

  21. At first I was unhappy about perilous waif coming before the next Daniel Black book, but then I found E. William Brown on patreon! With my monthly "donation" of 5 bucks, I was able to read the first few chapters, and I must say they are every bit as exciting as Daniel Black. Perilous waif, and a couple of other stories he has posted there easily take the edge off the wait. If you loyal fans haven't checked his stories out there, you are seriously missing out.

    1. Nah, i/we have gone cold turkey as it were for over a year now. At this point another couple of weeks (or months in case of the Daniel Black books) aren't going to kill me/us.

Besides Mr.Williams actually has legit reasons for his publishing hiatus, and been very good about keeping his readers informed about progress made (or setbacks as it may happen) in his writing process. (*)

      * = unlike a number of other genre authors i could name who have been stringing their fanbase along for years if not decades with promises of new entries to popular series that somehow never actually materialize. Yeah, i'm looking at you Gerrold, Pournelle, Butcher, Rothfuss (i'm sure everyone here has their own personal rogues gallery of writers with perpetual 'almost done' ghost books).

  22. I just donated on patreon, and I know I am buying Perilous Waif as soon as it gets out. Takes the sting out of waiting for the next Daniel Black Installment.

  23. I will be doing the same. Pretty sure my donation will help speed up my next Daniel Black fix!!
And I am sure the Perilous Waif will just be as good. So YAY more book series to get addicted to. . . .
