Extermination Released

I ran into a couple of last-minute formatting issues with the document, but Extermination is now in Amazon's publication queue. It will be available whenever their system finishes processing it, which based on past experience will probably take an hour or two for customers in the US.

  8. By the way where should we send correction suggestions to? Most books I read have some issues I notice or misunderstand, including books one and two of the Daniel black series. Such as "there was enough left to tank a few more hits", which occurs in black coven, even though it does make sense with mmorpg terminology, I think it would seem more natural to "take" a few more hits instead of "tank" a few more hits.

    1. You have to remember that David is a gamer. Part of his "exploits" was from MMORPGs he played in our world. It'd be strange if he didn't say tank.

  27. After some quick googling, here are the steps involved if you want to read extermination today outside US :

    1. Download the Kindle for android application from the Amazon and install it on your tablet.

    2. Create a new account with Amazon.com. Use a US address as your delivery address. You can use a virtual USA address from companies like Shipito.

3.Sign in to the Kindle for android with your new account.

    4. If you have a US debit or credit card, you can pay for books from US Kindle Store with it.

If you don't have a US debit or credit card, just buy an Amazon.com Gift Card (e-mail gift card or printable gift card) from your non-US Amazon account. You can also buy Amazon Gift cards on eBay.

    5. Select a Kindle book. On the payment page, enter your Gift Card. Your payment will be processed and your ebook will be downloaded the next time you sync your Kindle. Your purchased book will appear in the "Archive" section on the Kindle for Android.

Note that Amazon can reject your transaction if you use a non-US IP address. You can get one by using a US proxy server, a US VPN or Tor.

Not sure that the Internet was intended that way.
Anyway, I'm going to hope for an european release.

  30. Hey Brown. There's a continuity error towards the end of the book. The last mention of the divine bananas are when Mara starts peeling hers. It's never discussed what Daniel does with his, whether that's eating it or putting it in his pocket or whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Also, I realize for plot reasons Daniel couldn't think of this idea because then he wouldn't have been recognized by Mara (who just so happened to be the one to investigate the group of elves. Eh, divine workings.)

But if Daniel just makes a perfect mould of his face using earth magic, it should be easy to return it to very close to what it resembled before with only minor inconsistencies in complexion, etc. He would just need to stick his head into the mould when he wanted to change back to his original appearance to make it match the inside perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  32. YEAH about the bananas! Can Daniel grow them in his sup up grove that he made? enchant the ground under it for it to draw from and have the dryads tend to it?

    ReplyDelete
  34. No, he can't. Bananas trees aren't capable of pollinating banana fruit flowers, so all bananas are sterile. Banana trees are asexual, so he would require a cutting.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Modern bananas are asexual and don't contain seeds. I wouldn't think the bananas growing next to the dinosaurs was modern.

  37. I had a question or two too, What does Gaia look like? It just says her figure is over exaggerated I think the term was? Or something to that effect. But I first pictured Gaia as vaguely resembling the stone golem style from God of War 2, so when I read that I got a weird image to say the least O_o

I also had a question I'd been thinking since Black Coven, was Hectate thinking of Mara when she gave her advice during the coven ritual?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A Svartelf more likely. If Hecate knew who the Unreveller was, why not tell? She really isn't all that much into rules apparently.

      Delete
    2. That's true, but it's been hinted at Hectate playing with strands of fate and having limited foresight and such, so maybe she didn't know it was Mara specifically but there was 'wounded soul' they'd meet down the line and it in fact turns out to be Mara. Or telling them too much might have risks and such, knowledge of the future can itself change the future and all that. I still like the idea it's Mara :P

      Delete
    3. Strictly speaking the concepts are not exclusive. Is there some reason the number of members in a coven tends to be odd?

      Delete
    4. I think Sefwin and Mara are future members.

  38. Aside from holding enchantments well, gold is a very dense substance. So it takes up very little room volumetrically.

This is what ten kilograms of gold, and ten kilograms in necklace form, looks like: http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2015/03/gold%20brick.jpg
    http://splashysplash.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/daddy-yankee-yellow-gold-miami-cuban-link-chain-necklace-10-kilos-bracelet-la-rompe-carros.jpg

Daniel could give Hecate 20-40 kilograms of gold power source to wear. That's 45 to 90 pounds. Hecate could probably fit 20 kilograms just around her neck in an Egyptian/Pharoah-like necklace.

And if the weight is too much for Hecate to wear (doubtful, she's an ancient Goddess) Daniel can just make it weigh less.

If a sixty pound rock power source is a useful minor artifact, then something that approaches that weight that Hecate can wear at all times is an even more useful minor artifact.

Also, if there's a concern about the power source getting damaged and going nuclear, Daniel can just install something that makes the enchantment turn off if its structure is damaged.

    1. And isn't gold/silver supposed to be more efficient/productive/effective? So that would be a nice change for him to make for her. And she can add or change whatever she likes in it. Or more or less? She has the power, and is an elder. So she should be able to do so safely.

  39. Great book! Here's two minor nitpicks, though:

"those shells were probably pushing a thousand meters per second when they came down"
I'm no military expert, but isn't that, like, Mach 3? Way past terminal velocity.
    Maybe you meant 1000 km/h?

You seem to use both "dived" and "dove" in the text. Which is no big deal - but maybe could you change "A Giant dove" to "A Giant dived"; my first thought there was "A 'giant dove'? Like, one with a 5m wingspan?"

    1. It was actually supposed to say feet per second rather than meters. That's what I get for working on an SF setting while writing a fantasy one.

  44. I have a serious problem with you, its all has to do with your writing style. You write this extremely interesting and great story...... as soon as it comes out we buy it and we're left craving for more we're going to pull out all of our hairs waiting for the next installment. That is my problem with you we are all deeply invested in this interesting universe you have created. this crazy and awesome saga I hope will expand into dozens of books. that's my problem with you why are you so good writer and weaving such a good story it keeps us on our seats every single page and we are all left wanting even more. But I do have a serious question for you when will Daniel get a formal trainig in that World's Magic history and skills. Don't get me wrong he's doing great but he can learn so much from the people around him and when will he have a proper magic library of his own possibly salvaged from all the other dead and dying cities or When will he create a magic computer that only he can usewell in your world maybe it will be a magic artifact / spirit to keep all the information straight. He has dozens of species with knowledge of magic but he has not had a chance to tap into any of it. He's all into powering up his coven but he needs personal magic and skills and a secret laboratory deep within the bottom of the island that only he can access through manipulating the earth. every wizard needs his own private sanctuary away from family friends and prying eyes to organize all these crazy skills. I have another question a much better question will he be able to expand his memory to better remember all of the skills. I understand that it is a matter of him not having enough time to learn. He is powerful but he is a baby when it comes to knowledge and every wizard needs proper knowledge. Seriously thank you for writing in sharing such an interesting story when is the next installment scheduled for do you have an idea how long we will have to wait thank you

  45. Love your story but sometimes you infuriate me with some of the things for instance Daniel never has time to relax or be with his girls or train and learn new magic he's constantly stuck with the same magic for instance the elves are very good with weather and air magic but he hasn't learned anything from them same with Alan and water magic and he still hasn't boosted his body eyesight and other senses with flash magic I feel that there is so much more he can do with just flush magic let alone everything else I hope he also gets the chance or ability to become at the very least a demigod preferably a god eventually and has time to learn and master new magics as well as his current ones also he need some personal hoes other than his cover like maybe make a few of the dryads his mistresses like that on familiar girl and Nomiko

    1. Flesh magic and a style of work based on trial and error don't mix all that well, if you assume a minimum of ethics in the experimentator. Also consider that even if he is confident he can eventually recover from a mistake, he might need to recover soon. Any prolonged unavailability is a security risk.

      Delete
    2. Also I think a lot of it is to do with time limits. It seems learning magic is potentially possible for everyone but it takes a lot of time and effort, and most don't have much to work with. But Daniel has Sorceries, which is different from wizardry which I take to mean learned magic. (There was a discussion where William Brown responded to this effect in a previous blog post) So the big thing about learning air magic is that he has no cheat for that, he has to learn it the hard way and that takes FAR too long as they're already inside the apocalypse. I think that's his main constraint in general, time. If he had a spare month or two to work he could probably raise an impenetrable fortress with all kinds of cooky defenses or create enough over-powered weapons that his side would be unstoppable. Hell if he could create a workable Air Fleet then it's basically game over for anyone without serious long range AoE attacks.

      Delete
    3. The entire point of this story is Daniel trying to play catch-up and establish his fortress + hone his skills before the enemy overwhelms him. If he had a couple months of free time, he could be easily crushing demi-gods and Great Beasts. And that would force the plot to be advanced to "end-game" where Daniel is going to be fighting against gods.

Also, it's implied in the last chapters that he'll be trying to keep his boosts from the dark elf transformation.

  47. The Earth Talisman has proved extremely useful. It's shapeshifting was strong enough to be a key component in the defeat of a demi-god. Another talisman with different strengths could really improve Daniel's personal combat ability and extend his range.

A Fire/Force Talisman. Works on the same ideas as Grinder. Has an advantage over the Earth Talisman in that it's always deadly and doesn't have to be shape-shifted, though shapeshifting it to suit the situation can help.

Create a murder frisbee: a saw blade made out of titanium (high melting point, strong, lightweight.) If Daniel thinks it would be to his advantage, make the frisbee out of several saw blades layered over each other.

Enchant the saw blade(s) with a flight enchantment. Enchant the blade(s) to spin at stupidly frightening speeds. Enchant the blade so that it can project force blades. Enchant the blade so it can create as hot a flame as pragmatically possible. Enchant it so it's heat resistant. Enchant the blade so it's reinforced. Enchant the blade so it can increase it's diameter from something like half a foot to something like six feet.

Since the blade should be able to reach speeds at least 60 mph and is always very sharp, it's great for close quarters combat, enemies that are grouped together, and ranged attacks. It can slip between cracks in heavy duty enchanted armor (if there are any) and makes a good improvised shield for the user and allies. If your enemies are lined up in formation/grouped up, you can send it down the length of their formation at neck/torso length at speeds of 60 mph it could decapitate 20 enemies in a single second.

No matter how layered the defense, between fire, force blades, and extremely fast and rotating titanium blades the Fire/Force Talisman should have some effect on any quasi-mortal being. Probably would have done pretty well against the dwarves. It's like the Earth Talisman, but a lot more immediately useful in lots of combat situations, and not as useful for territory/field control.

Another note: Armor. Now that Daniel knows how to inherently reduce the weight of something, he really needs to start wearing some armor. He can layer whatever other enchantments he thinks necessary into the armor. But an inch or two of very lightweight armor would do a lot to protect him from things like that mage-slaying arrow. And he can create an extremely formfitting helmet so it doesn't impair his hearing/vision much. Concussions are the worst thing that can happen in combat if everything can be healed.

And there's no reason not to wear the armor. Between Avilla, earth sorcery, and force-cushioning enchantments, I'm sure Daniel could make it about as comfortable to wear as slightly uncomfortable clothes. And that's worth it for the safety.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Is he going to use the ice wolf essence to make more wolfen in the next book? Or is he unable to use it? Can his flesh sorcery learn more shapes over time (since logically speaking, if he has to shapes, or even one, then the sorcery at least has the principles down, and he can just build off those, though maybe with a little work) (please)? Will he gain more sorceries (please)? Is he going to plant ambrosial apples and bananas~ in his super garden? Will his castle eventually become a mobile floating fortress? Will his flesh and/or mana sorcery help him with things like the wolfen?
I hope these things will be pondered. I presume the author has already done so though.
On a side note, Wiliam, did you use apples and bananas on purpose? Or what? Cause there is a song about these fruits being eaten by an individual who likes eating them.

  49. For the next book, would it really be that hard for Daniel to make an atmosphere purifier? If he were doing it with tech I could understand the challenge, but he's already a broken character with magic that makes everything easy. Couldn't he just make a machine that floats up into the atmosphere and starts cleaning the muck out, then use the blueprints for that to make a factory and launch a good thousand of them up?

    ReplyDelete

    1. What muck? This world has never had an industrial revolution, so there isn't much in the way of air pollution.

  50. Magnesium is the seventh most common element in the Earth's crust, and well known for their effectiveness during world war II. It would be very cheap production wise to make magnesium rounds of various types. Not that Daniel necessarily needs more 'fire' power, but aside from burning ridiculously hot magnesium makes for excellent flash grenades. Works well for confusing and frightening enemies in a way that utilizes 'natural philosophy' so it can't be warded against in a more traditional way.

  51. I was surprised that, when having a private conversation with Mara, neither one of them mentioned her secret of having a twin. In Black Coven she was about to go ballistic and try to kill him when he found out, and swore him to secrecy. But then they start going at it like a couple crazed bonobos and he doesn't even ask what Mara's sister thinks about the whole thing. Or even if sister could potentially take control and betray him to Mom or something. Was just surprise they never brought up the silent observer in the room.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was thinking about that a little too. I assumed it was because gaea might hear them. And mara didn't want to risk it. Also, i do not think it is so, but mara's note at the end might have been for that twin. Gaea shouldn't know of her. I doubt that note was about the twin or that they were worried. So i found it strange too. I really wanted more details on that. I hope it comes up next book. I wonder when Daniel is going to give the rest of his coven those magical gold/silver piercings/rings/amulets/jewelry in general? Beyond the normal amulet. Something to keep hidden. Maybe something that, if found, enemies wouldn't value.

    2. I am more annoyed that we keep having a big deal made about how Daniel is such a puritan japanese-main-character-esque guy about not having sex with all the women who want to bone him -- to the point of altering the coven contract to be more restrictive on himself last book -- and then the story completely forgets that exists when he decides to bang Mara... who is not one of his retainers or coven-mates. Just being set up to be one in the future.

Looks like those coven rules aren't exactly as solid as we were made to believe! Oh no, plotholes!

Please just accept that the rules of the world are different and stop being such a moralfag, mister main character. It is frustrating, not endearing. I would give my left nut to have either Pelagia or Tova as official concubines at some point in this story. Severe lack of not-emotionally-crippled women in his life, in my opinion. Either of those two would let the man just fucking relax for once.

      Delete
    3. Chapter 22 of The Black Coven
"I shall indulge the desires of my coven-mates, and they shall indulge mine, seeking love and happiness together forever."

The coven bond was worded to keep other MEN from them. Daniel's fear was being cheated on with men. Cerise has already had sex with most of the dryads on the side so by natural extension Daniel can get some too.

      Delete
    4. @Kestrel

I don't think Daniel is avoiding banging Pelagia or Tova because he's a moralfag. It's because they're both extremely skilled manipulators who are reaaally good at controlling people through sex and seduction. And banging them would probably be an extremely stupid things to do.

Also, Daniel's conversation with Hecate has all but guaranteed an orgy (or at least lots of sex) with the grove in the next book.

      Delete
    5. As Grammer Nazi points out, I'm not righting a porn world where sex has no consequences. Daniel already has four sexy ladies to keep satisfied, so he's not exactly hurting for options when he's in the mood. But he's far too busy to spend a lot of time arranging orgies, and having sex with a woman tends to have consequences. At this point in the story Daniel was more interested in building good relationships with his coven than playing the field.

As for Mara? Gee, the goddess whose major power has to do with freedom and breaking bonds was able to get around the restrictions of Daniel's coven bond. Maybe I should have been more explicit about explaining it, but that hardly seems like a big surprise.

      Delete
    6. That totally hadn't occurred to me, because she doesn't seem to unravel everything so I'd assumed it had to be actively done. Like when she first unveiled herself last book she broke Daniel's shield like nothing, but the resistance on his coat stopped her from chewing him up. There was that bit in a fight somewhere where her Aura was unravelling magic but again I'd assumed that was active rather than passive.

      Delete
    7. Me neither, I thought Daniel was free as free to play with other women as Cerise seems to be, which would automatically include Mara without the need for her special magic powers. Apart from that, picking and choosing your sexual partners rather than indiscriminately rabbiting everything female that doesn't jump up a tree on the count of three seems like eminent good sense to me... xD

      Delete
    8. "Mara's twin"? What, like, conjoined, and invisible except when she / they are in fox form? I had a different interpretation. I figured Mara must have multiple personality disorder (which is controversial; but most frequently found (if it really exists) in people who've survived tremendous trauma (most often, rape; but other kinds of trauma may have similar effects) that began at an early age and continued over a period of years). And, yeah, I was surprised not to see it addressed in her / their sex scene with Daniel -- though may that's what Brown meant when he mentioned Daniel finding deep psychological wounds.

Anyway, I'm grateful for the engrossing, enjoyable read. I'll absolutely purchase the next book as soon as it's ready. :)

  52. Cerise has the ability to bring back the dead by binding them to objects, animals, or people. It's implied that by taking a person (like a bigoted Aesir) and banishing their souls from their bodies ghosts can be bound to the bodies permanently.

Cerise has stated the desire to resurrect former followers of Hecate and other useful people because of all the potential assets running around Kozalin as ghosts after Hel's attack.

This crosses into a moral grey area, because Daniel has no captured enemies on hand that would make suitable hosts for these ghosts. However, there is a potential loophole if banishing a person's/animal's soul from their body doesn't immediately kill them in a controlled environment.

Daniel has demonstrated the ability to casually change people's DNA several times throughout the books. That's a mind boggling power.

Pigs have rather startling similarities in DNA when compared to humans, if Daniel is too squeamish to perform Necromancy on a sapient. He should be able to banish the soul of a pig and then change that comatose pig flesh into a 100% human soul-less shell, though it would probably take an unfortunate amount of time to perform such a dramatic transformation and there could be complications with symbiotic bacteria, etc.

If Daniel's down for Necromancy on sapients (why not?) but is too squeamish to use a human, Neanderthals/Ape Men are very, very close to humans. With just a bit of adjustment, you've got a homo-sapiens. And even with the nuclear weapon success, there will be a lot of Neanderthals running around Daniel could capture, de-soul, mutate, and re-soul.

Here's hoping for some Mad Science/Dark Soul Magic in books four or five.

How about some phosphorous type illumination round. Night attack? Poof instant daylight for the turkey shoot. Hell since he got a light sensor working for his neutron bomb of death can he have mortar rounds that home in on a laser dot? Accuracy made easy. Also why doesn't he have a few of the skimmer turrets on the walls and at important checkpoints. Basically what I'm saying is please write faster...

  54. Major time discrepancy error on the return trip from saving the dark elves. Based on Daniel's description of the trip back and the fact that Embla was healed only hours before re-arriving at Kozalin the trip back should have only taken 24 hours. But Daniel says, "Had it really only been a week?" when he returns.

That's an error of up to five days. How/when do readers get an edited version of Extermination free of errors like these via kindle?

    Replies
    1. The obvious implication there is that Daniel didn't have time to just sit down and completely heal everyone up during the trip back, and so Embla spent several days as an invalid while they traveled back. Is that really so hard to figure out, or are you just used to assuming anything that isn't instantly obvious is an error?
